This is your space to reflect, express and speak freely. The questions below invite you to share your journey as a Black photographer. This is about your practice, your influences, your hopes and your truth.

There are six questions. Feel free to answer in your own style, in your own time. We’re here to honour your voice, not to edit it.

When you're ready, scroll down and begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before you submit your Q&A, you might want to know what’s involved, who it’s for, and how your work will be shared. These FAQs cover the essentials, and if you’re still unsure, reach out. This space is for you.

Who can take part in the Q&A?

Black photographers and visual story tellers at any stage — emerging, established or exploring — are welcome. If you’re engaging with photography and the Black gaze, this space is for you.

How do we define Black?

At theBLKGZE, we see Blackness as a practice, not a box. It’s how we move, feel, imagine, and refuse.

Inspired by Tina M. Campt, we honour Blackness as lived and expansive. It’s not defined by biology or appearance, but by experience and belonging.

We welcome African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latinx, Afro-Arab, Aboriginal, mixed-heritage and diasporic voices.

If you live it, feel it, or carry it, this space is yours so add your voice.

What do I need to submit?

Just your answers to six questions, four images, a short bio, and links to your site or socials. You don’t need fancy gear or a huge following, just your perspective and work.

I’m not sure if my work is good enough. Should I still submit?

Yes. theBLKGZE is about honest voices and lived experience, not perfection. If you have something to say and images that reflect your perspective, we want to hear from you.

Do I need to answer all six questions?

We encourage it. Each question helps build a fuller picture of your voice, values and vision, and together, they create a powerful archive of Black photographic thought.

What kind of images should I send?

hoose four photographs that best reflect your practice. They can be recent, iconic, experimental, as long as they’re yours and speak to your perspective.

How will my work be shared?

Your Q&A will be published on theBLKGZE alongside your selected images, bio and links. We’ll also amplify it through our newsletter and social channels.

Why should I take part?

This is a chance to be part of a growing chorus of Black photographic voices — to reflect, be seen, and shape how our work is remembered. Your voice matters. Share it.

Can I edit my answers after submitting?

Yes. If you need to make changes after submission, just email us. We want you to feel confident about how your story is told.

Is there a deadline to submit?

Submissions are open on a rolling basis, but the sooner you share, the sooner your work can be featured. Don’t wait.

Do I keep the rights to my submission?

Yes. You retain full ownership of your work. We only showcase submissions with permission, and always credit creators clearly and respectfully.

Am I allowed to remove my Q&A later on?

Yes. You can ask us to remove your Q&A at any time. Just send an email and we’ll take it down, no explanations needed. You always have control over your story.
